It appears that BMW’s exterior design department is taking a more sensible approach once again. Unlike the iX and 4 Series, among others, the latest 5 Series and upcoming 2 Series Gran Coupe are embracing a less extreme design. Recent spy photos reveal a revised version of BMW’s compact sedan, which seems to lean towards a more traditional aesthetic rather than a groundbreaking one.
Judging by the subtle modifications seen on this Gran Coupe prototype, it’s likely that we’re looking at a mid-cycle refresh rather than an entirely new vehicle. This aligns with the fact that the Gran Coupe was introduced just last year, in 2020. The front end displays a potentially thinner grille compared to the current model, while the headlights appear more swept-back, and the bumper showcases revised intake openings.
The overall profile of the Gran Coupe remains largely unchanged, though there seems to be a more pronounced line along the door handles. Notably, the rear quarter windows have been given a more prominent Hofmeister kink.
Moving to the back, the trunk lid now positions the license plate higher than on the current Gran Coupe. Corresponding taillight changes are likely, but they are difficult to discern due to the camouflage. Additionally, this particular example lacks exposed exhaust tips, a departure from the current U.S. market variant.
Considering that this is likely a moderate update of the existing Gran Coupe, the engines will probably carry over with some potential updates to their power output. Expect a few variations of turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The interior may see minor changes and feature updates as part of the redesign. It’s anticipated that the vehicle will be unveiled next year, as suggested by the spy photographer, with production expected to commence towards the end of the following year.
